I have a multi-disciplinary practice encompassing photographing, drawing, print-making and sculpture. Physical materials feature heavily in my work, as the very subject matter, at other points they have been combined with photography to produce boundaries between the subject and the viewer. My fascination with material properties has led me to an ongoing exploration into the qualities, tangibility, tactility and reaction towards them. I have employed a range of substances including concrete, plant-life, hair and plastics.
Increasingly, I find my practice being informed by my Autism, specifically my heightened experience of the everyday, sensory environment. This has made me consider communication and how I can translate my challenges into visual media. Frequently, I gravitate towards small, unnoticed details including textures, which I take and then enlarge. Due to my condition, having control over my surroundings is paramount, which led me to remove materials from original context and transfer them to my own space. This sense of control and loss of control are recurrent themes across my entire practice.
Currently, I have an ongoing project with The Panacea Museum in Bedford, which will culminate in an exhibition entitled Interior Lives in 2025. Previously, I was involved in the Bedford Creative Arts, Pride of Place project, which resulted in two exhibitions in empty shop units in Bedford.
